Designed to prevent passengers from becoming trapped during accidents or power failures, the upcoming regulation directly impacts EV manufacturers, most notably Tesla.
Electronic Doors Present Growing Safety Risks
While flush and electronic door handle designs have surged in popularity in recent years, they have also emerged as critical safety hazards when a vehicle’s electrical power fails during an accident. In several reported incidents, passengers who survived high-speed collisions subsequently died or suffered severe injuries due to fires because doors failed to unlock and manual release mechanisms were non-intuitive or inaccessible.
Responding to these severe risks, a Silicon Valley engineer submitted a formal petition calling for immediate regulatory intervention. NHTSA evaluated the request, acknowledged the critical nature of the vulnerability, and formally announced the initiation of a rulemaking process to establish new federal motor vehicle safety standards.
Key Changes Expected Under the New Rules
Once finalized, the proposed regulatory framework developed by NHTSA will require all new motor vehicles sold in the United States to meet stringent door exit criteria, including:
- Prominent Manual Emergency Exits: Intuitively designed mechanical release systems that passengers can easily locate and operate during panic situations, even in total power loss.
- Standardized Emergency Access: Fail-safe infrastructure that automatically unlocks door mechanisms upon impact or enables first responders and emergency personnel to easily gain entry from the outside.
