The headline number

Around 1.16 million people died in road traffic crashes in 2025, according to the latest WHO estimates published in July 2026. That is more than 3,100 deaths every day, over 130 every hour, and more than two every minute. Between 20 and 50 million more people are injured each year, many left with permanent disabilities.

Road traffic injury remains the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5 to 29, ahead of any disease. By overall ranking across all ages, road crashes sit among the world’s leading causes of death, an extraordinary position for something entirely human-made and largely preventable.

The trend: real progress, far too slow

The direction of travel is genuinely improving. WHO’s July 2026 update finds that global road deaths fell by 21% between 2011 and 2025, a period in which the world’s vehicle fleet surged, road networks expanded massively and the population grew by around a billion people. Each journey, on average, has become considerably safer; there are simply many more journeys.

Earlier WHO reporting tells the same story over a longer arc: more than half of all countries reduced their road deaths in the decade to 2021, and ten countries cut them by over 50% in that period, proving that rapid, large-scale reduction is achievable with known measures.

The problem is the pace. The UN Sustainable Development Goal target calls for a 50% reduction in road deaths and injuries by 2030. A 21% drop over 14 years is progress; it is not a halving trajectory. In July 2026, UN member states adopted a new General Assembly progress declaration intended to accelerate action toward the 2030 target measured against 2021 levels.

Progress is dangerously uneven

The global average hides a divided world. According to WHO’s 2026 figures, over the same period that deaths fell 36% in the WHO European Region and 15% in the Western Pacific, they fell only 2% in South-East Asia, stayed flat in the Americas, and rose 17% in the African Region.

The burden follows the same fault line: around nine in ten of the world’s road deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, which have only around 60% of the world’s vehicles. Measured per person, the risk of dying on the road in the highest-burden countries is several times that of the safest. Rapid motorisation, and in particular a sharp global rise in motorcycle use, is outpacing the safety systems, laws, infrastructure and trauma care that high-income countries built over decades.

Who is dying

More than half of all road deaths are vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other people without a protective vehicle shell around them. The pattern varies by region: powered two- and three-wheeler riders dominate deaths across much of Asia, pedestrians account for an outsized share in Africa, and car occupants make up a larger proportion in highly motorised countries.

Two more patterns hold almost everywhere: road deaths fall overwhelmingly on males, who account for roughly three out of four deaths worldwide, and on working-age and young people, which is why road crashes rank so high as a cause of years of life lost, and why their economic toll is so heavy.

What it costs

Road crashes cost most countries around 3% of their gross domestic product once medical costs, lost productivity, property damage and the long shadow of disability are counted. For low- and middle-income economies, the World Bank has repeatedly shown that halving road deaths would deliver substantial long-term income gains. Road safety is not only a health imperative; it is one of the most underrated development investments available.

The numbers in context

A few comparisons that put 1.16 million annual deaths in perspective:

  • It is roughly equivalent to a full wide-body passenger aircraft crashing with no survivors every two hours, every day of the year. Aviation would not tolerate that toll for a week; roads have carried it for decades.
  • The cumulative toll since the year 2000 exceeds 25 million lives, more than the population of many countries.
  • For every death, many more people are seriously injured, and entire households, especially in poorer countries where the victim is often a breadwinner, are pushed toward poverty.

Where the numbers come from, and their limits

Global figures are WHO estimates, built from country-reported data and statistical modelling to correct for under-reporting, which is substantial in many countries. This is why WHO’s numbers often exceed the totals in official national statistics, and why figures for the same country can legitimately differ between sources. The bottom line

The world’s roads kill on the scale of a major epidemic, with the crucial difference that every mechanism of prevention is already known, tested and in use somewhere. The 21% global decline since 2011 is proof that the toolkit works; the 17% rise in Africa is proof of what happens where it is not applied. The gap between those two numbers, not any scientific unknown, is the global road safety problem.
