Road Safety Charter
The principles every member of roadsafetynews.com undertakes to follow. Signing is a commitment an organisation makes of its own accord — not a standard we certify it against.
Section 01
Purpose
Around 1.19 million people are killed on the world’s roads every year. Road traffic injury is the leading killer of children and young people aged 5 to 29. The United Nations Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 calls for these deaths to be halved, and Sustainable Development Goal target 3.6 commits governments to the same.
roadsafetynews.com is a global platform bringing together organisations that work in road safety. This Charter sets out the principles its members undertake to follow.
By signing, an organisation commits to the principles below of its own accord and agrees to be listed publicly in the platform’s member directory.
Section 02
Who may sign
The Charter is open to organisations in six categories. Your category determines the letters in your membership number and the additional commitments you take on under Section 4.
Driving academies and training providers
Equipment manufacturers and suppliers
Consultancies and engineering firms
Fleet operators and logistics companies
Associations, foundations and NGOs
Public authorities and municipalities
Section 03
General commitments
Every signatory accepts the following six commitments.

Article 1
Safe System approach
The organisation accepts that human error is inevitable, but that death and serious injury resulting from that error are not. It conducts its activities on this basis.

Article 2
Legal compliance
The organisation complies with the road safety legislation, product safety regulations and professional qualification requirements in force in every country where it operates.

Honest claims
The organisation does not make exaggerated, unsubstantiated or misleading claims about the contribution its products or services make to road safety.

Article 4
Annual Statement
The organisation submits a short Annual Statement each year, summarising its road safety activity over the preceding twelve months. The statement is published on the platform.

Article 5
Incident notification
The organisation notifies the platform within 30 days of any serious safety failure, product recall or formal investigation affecting its products or services.

Article 6
Use of the membership mark
The organisation uses the platform’s membership mark and membership number only in accordance with the published Brand Guidelines.
Section 04
Category commitments
Each signatory additionally accepts the commitments applying to its own category.
Driving academies and training providers
- Ensures instructors hold the qualifications legally required in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Maintains and inspects training vehicles on a documented schedule.
- Reviews training programmes against current legislation and crash data.
- Reports learner numbers, instruction hours and course content accurately.
Equipment manufacturers and suppliers
- Documents conformity with the safety standards applicable in each market where its products are sold.
- Keeps test reports and declarations of conformity available on request.
- Informs users clearly about product service life, conditions of use and maintenance requirements.
- Acts without delay on any recall arising from a product defect.
Consultancies and engineering firms
- Applies recognised technical methods in road design, audit and analysis work.
- Discloses any conflict of interest to the client in advance.
- States the data sources underlying its reports.
Fleet operators and logistics companies
- Complies with driving time and rest period rules.
- Operates a documented vehicle maintenance programme.
- Provides periodic road safety training to its drivers.
- Records and retains fleet collision data.
Associations, NGOs and public authorities
- Takes an evidence-based approach to its road safety work.
- Publishes the outcomes of the campaigns and projects it runs.
- Discloses its sources of funding transparently.
Section 05
How membership works
5.1 Application
The organisation completes the application form and provides proof of legal existence — a company register extract, trade licence, tax registration or equivalent.
5.2 Identity check
The platform verifies that the organisation is a legally constituted entity operating in the field it states. This check confirms identity only. It is not an assessment of the quality of the organisation’s products or services.
5.3 Membership number
Each accepted organisation receives a permanent membership number, for example RSN-DA-2026-0147.
5.4 Term
Membership runs for one year. Renewal is conditional on submission of the Annual Statement.
5.5 Verification page
Every member has a public verification page showing its name, country, category, membership number, validity dates and current status — Active, Expired, Suspended or Withdrawn.
Section 06
Use of the membership mark
Permitted
- On the organisation’s own website
- In corporate marketing materials, catalogues and presentations
- In email signatures and the footer of corporate documents
Not permitted
- On product packaging or product labelling
- In any way suggesting that a product or service has received safety approval
- In tender or public procurement submissions as a substitute for a certificate of conformity
- After membership has ended
On termination of membership, the organisation removes the mark and membership number from all channels within 30 days.
Section 07
Suspension and withdrawal
The platform may suspend or terminate membership where:
- The Charter has been breached
- The application contained false information
- The membership mark has been misused
- The Annual Statement has not been submitted
- A practice directly endangering road safety has been identified
The organisation is notified in writing and given 30 days to respond before a decision is taken. Terminated memberships appear as Withdrawn on the verification page.
Section 08
Scope and limitations
This Charter and any membership certificate issued under it confirm that the signatory is a member of the platform and has adopted the principles set out above.
They do not constitute a certification, accreditation, approval of conformity, endorsement or recommendation. The platform does not audit its members’ products, services or operations and gives no warranty in respect of them.
Responsibility for compliance with this Charter rests solely with the signatory. Annual Statements are the statements of the organisations that submit them, and are published without independent verification.
Section 09
Entry into force and amendment
This Charter takes effect on acceptance by the signatory and registration by the platform.
The platform may amend the Charter. Amendments are published under a new version number and notified to members at least 60 days in advance. An organisation that does not accept a new version may terminate its membership.
Signature
The organisation named below confirms that it has read, understood and accepted this Charter in full. Signature is completed through the online application form; no printed copy is required.
